Body Mass Index(BMI) and Academic Achievement: An Inverted-U Relationship
Koh Young-Woo

Abstract
This study examines how the nutritional status affects to the academic achievement of Korea adolescents. In particular, the main purpose of this paper is that we confirm the existence of an inverted-U relationship between the nutritional status and the academic achievement. In order to this analysis, we use the first wave (2004) data of the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) provided by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET). The dependent variable of this analysis is the standard score of 2005 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) about three tests (Korean Language, Mathematics, Foreign Language(English)). Using Body Mass Index (BMI) and its square (BMI2) as the main explanatory variables of this study, we estimate the simple linear model. According to the results of this research, there exists statistically significant inverted-U relationship between CSAT score and BMI. This estimation result means that underweight, as well as obesity, is very important factor which is a negative impact on academic achievement. While there also exists statistically significant inverted-U relationship between CSAT score of male students and their BMI, the inverted-U relationship of female students is not statistically significant. About two CSAT tests except for mathematics, these gender differences are similar.
